MIDDLE SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS

From Mr. Magliozzi – Athletic Director

Hello Families, As we began the start of the 24-25 school year, we have been working on ways to bring back Girls' volleyball and track and field to our middle schools this spring.  To make these two sports available, we have had to increase the fee to participate and adjust the operational structure for volleyball.  Below is a description of the changes.

Volleyball Structure:

The goal is to have an intramural program within each middle school as well as have a few matches between the two schools.  Overall, this will allow for more students to participate, learn, and receive volleyball- specific training while maximizing the after-school hours for involvement.  The students will play games within their own school and will have additional matches with the Marshall in order to provide more competition.

Track and Field:

The team will continue to compete in the Middlesex League as it has in previous years.

Fee:

For the spring of 2025, the fee will be $140.00 to participate.

Transportation:

After-school busing will not be available, therefore families will have to arrange transportation after the practices and games.  Transportation will be provided for the away meets for track and field as we have done in the past.

As we plan for the spring season, we are asking for your input based on this information.  In order to assess the interest level for each sport, please complete the Google survey to help us work towards reinstating the sports.

LOCKE MONSTERS ROBOTICS UPDATE

The Locke Monsters Robotics team competed in their first event of the 2024 - 2025 season on Saturday, December 14th at Whitman-Hanson Regional High School.  This competition consisted of both high school and middle school teams, many of which had already attended at least one competition already this season.  We have four returning 7th graders on our team and seven members, a combination of 6th and 7th graders, who are new to our team this year.  The students are working in three separate teams, each with their own robot.  VEX Robotics is a student-centered program where the students are responsible for designing, building, coding, and driving their robots.  In yesterday’s event, each team participated in 7 qualification rounds, skills rounds, and were also interviewed by judges who asked them a variety of questions about their robot.

Congratulations to Srihaas Mynampati, Ethan Beach, and Arius Wirsch of Team 8025B who ended up in 4th place out of 43 teams at the end of the day.  They chose team 8025A (Nikhil Gandhi, Colin Baldwin, Avery Gagne, and Tyler Hardy) to be their alliance partner in the elimination rounds. Their alliance made it through the round of 16, but was defeated in the final seconds of the quarterfinal round.

Team 8025C (Cassie Berube, Megan Hogan, Sophia Amato, and Michael Beach) worked diligently through numerous challenges over the course of the day and have already started planning improvements to their robot for the next competition.

Mr. DeBenedetto and Mrs. Tolleson are extremely proud of the perseverance these students demonstrated over the course of a 10 hour competition day, in addition to more than two hours of commuting time.  We would like to thank Mr. John Berube and Mr. Jim O’Connor who have been serving as mentors to our students throughout the season.  We would also like to thank Locke Monsters Alumni Eli Baldwin for coming to our after-school sessions to help with a wide variety of tasks. Our next competition is scheduled for Sunday, January 12, 2025 at Walsh Middle School in Framingham, MA.

HOMEWORK CLUB

HW Club will continue throughout the year. It will meet in the library every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1:45 – 2:45. Students do not need to sign up ahead of time for HW club. Students will report to the library immediately after school and sign-in. Students can attend as many days as the parent/student believes are necessary. Students are expected to stay for the full hour. Parent pick-up at 2:45 is required.

MATH PROBLEM OF THE WEEK #12

Holiday Dessert (My favorite)

Vanessa bought some round holiday dessert plates to give as a gift to her friend. However, the store only had 5 of the 8 plates she wanted. (All of the plates are the same.) The stack of five plates measured 1.5 inches tall, and when two plates were removed from the stack the remaining stack of three plates had a height of 1 inch.

1. When Vanessa finally has all 8 of the plates she wants, how tall will the stack of 8 plates be, in inches? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest hundredth.

2. What is the height of just one of these plates, in inches? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest tenth.
