LIFE AT THE LOCKE … FINAL EDITION 2020

June 14, 2020
Last week of LVMS!! Only 3 DAYS OF LEARNING REMAIN …
FINAL THOUGHTS
Dear Parents/Guardians, Staff, and Students,
During these extraordinary times and with little notice, we had to create a virtual learning environment for our students. I want to thank our staff for all of their efforts in providing our students with a new way of learning. It wasn’t always easy or perfect, but we all tried to do our best for the benefit of our kids. Also, thank you to parents and guardians for assuming “homeschooling” roles and supporting our staff and your children. I wish you a happy, healthy summer with many days of learning. We all are hoping to be back in the fall at the “real” Locke. See you then.
In addition, I wish all of our 7th graders the best of luck as they move on to high school and new learning experiences. It has been a pleasure working with you for the last two years. Remember to always work hard, make positive choices, and make sure you learn something new every day. Most importantly, follow your dreams! You will be missed!
We have a lengthy newsletter today with a lot of information and end of the year announcements. Enjoy!

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL – Wednesday, June 17th
We are planning a drive-through event for families on Wednesday, June 17th. Our staff will be at the Locke to say goodbye to our students. The event schedule is as follows:
8:30 – 9:30 5th grade
9:30 – 10:30 6th grade
10:30 – 11:30 7th grade
The traffic pattern will be: enter at Urban, go through the loop, and exit at Allen. Families will not be exiting cars. Please keep speed at 5 MPH. Please feel free to decorate cars!
All 7th graders will be receiving a yearbook and a t-shirt as they exit the loop.
STUDENT BELONGINGS
If you did not get a chance to pick up student belongings, please call the main number at 978-528-8650 between 8:00 AM -- 2:00 PM to schedule a pick-up time. Our secretary, Lucy O'Brien will be in the office during those times.
REPORT CARDS – TRIMESTER 2 and TRIMESTER 3
Trimester 2 and Trimester 3 report cards will be published on June 17th.
PARENT/STUDENT RESOURCES
It has been a difficult few weeks for all of us with the pandemic continuing and unrest regarding racism and violence. The following two links may be helpful to families as you navigate conversation regarding recent events.
STUDENT SURVEY
A student survey was sent out last week. We would appreciate it if all students can fill it out and submit. We are looking for important student feedback on remote learning and how they believe they have done overall.

5th GRADE PASSING VIDEO
Please see the 5th grade end of year passing video. Thanks students, staff, Ms. Higgins, and Ms. Cabral.
SUMMER MATH AND READING
Please check the district website for the information and assignments for summer math and reading. The assignments will be posted later this week.
BILLERICA PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING CHALLENGE
Students must register to participate in the library’s reading program by using BEANSTACK on their smart phone or computer.  They can log in minutes read.  Every 60 minutes will earn them a unique badge as well as an increasing amount of virtual tickets.  The virtual tickets can then be used to place in virtual prize cans in which the students have a chance to win Amazon gift cards!  The more they read the better their chances of winning.
Yes, school summer reading counts.  In fact they'll get bonus tickets for completing their book.  E-books, graphic novels, manga, audio books, etc... all count as well. Other ways to earn virtual tickets could be to write a short book review or participate in virtual activities like, draw a picture, write a poem, create a short story, research answers to easy question, etc...  The link to register for the program is below.
