LIFE AT THE LOCKE … Issue #22 2019-2020

February 2, 2020
Dear Parents/Guardians, Staff, and Students,
I hope you are all enjoying the weekend. It’s a busy Sunday: the Groundhog didn’t see his shadow which means an early Spring (we’ll see), the Super Bowl is still being played even without the Pats, and today is a rare Palindrome date (02/02/2020 – more on that in the math problem). We have 5 DAYS OF LEARNING this week and as always we have a busy week ahead. Let’s take a look and see what’s happening …
Monday, February 3rd is a “D” Day. Please plan accordingly for the week.

EARLY RELEASE TUESDAY
Tuesday, February 4th is an early release for students. Dismissal time is 11:40 (depending on buses, it may be a few minutes later.)
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Do not confine your children to your own learning, for they were born in another time.”
-- Ancient proverb
PROGRESS REPORTS
Progress reports for core classes will be published on Wednesday, February 5th.  Please sign and return the progress report envelope. Quarter 2 final grades for unified arts classes will be posted on the Aspen portal.
AFTER SCHOOL THIS WEEK
HW Club, activities, and late buses will resume on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. The late bus schedule is attached.
I-READY MID-YEAR ASSESSMENT
The i-ready mid-year assessment will be given during the month of January and the 1st week of February. Each team will determine their own schedule for testing. A reminder for students to do their best work on this assessment as we utilize the data as one of many factors to determine placement for next year and to improve our instructional practices.
HOOPS FOR HEART FUNDRAISER
Students will be given pledge sheets this week for the American Heart Association fundraiser. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Our student basketball tournaments will take place during Spirit Week.
SPIRIT WEEK IS COMING …
Spirit week is February 10th – 14th.  Please see the attached themes. Have fun!
AUTISM AWARENESS T-SHIRTS
April is Autism Awareness Month and on April 2nd staff and students will wear t-shirts to promote acceptance and understanding. If you would like to participate, t-shirts are $12 (CASH OR CHECK, please) and orders are due by Wednesday, February 26th. See attached order form. Students can turn orders into the main office.
HONOR ROLL – TRIMESTER 1
Congratulations to all students for their accomplishment of achieving high honors or honors for the 1st trimester. The criteria for honor roll is:
High Honor Roll = 90% or higher overall grade in all Trimester 1 subjects (core classes, electives, PE, Band/Chor/Orch, reading, world language)
Honor Roll = 80% or higher in all Trimester1 subjects
Please see the complete list of students on our website:
MATH PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Last week’s answer: a. 35 b. 5 c. 1/7
GLOBAL PALINDROME DAY!!
It is February 2, 2020, or 02/02/2020, in both the MM/DD/YYYY format and the DD/MM/YYYY format. The numbers read the same frontwards and backwards which is a palindrome. The last date like this was 909 years ago on 11/11/1111. When is the next date that will be a global palindrome? Bonus: When is the next one after that?
Turn your answers into the office. SHOW YOUR WORK. The correct answers will be put in a drawing for huge, tremendous prizes!
