LIFE AT THE LOCKE … Issue #39 2017-2018

The Final Edition of 2017-2018
June 17, 2018
Dear Parents/Guardians, Staff, and Students,
Happy Father’s Day!! Only 5 days of learning remain …
FINAL THOUGHTS
I wish all of our 8th graders the best of luck as they move on to high school and new learning experiences. It has been a great pleasure working with you for the last three years. Remember to always work hard, make positive choices, and make sure you learn something new every day. Most importantly, follow your dreams! You will be missed! Remember ABL – Always Be Learning
Also to our Locke families, thank you for the support and commitment that you have given to our staff and your children this year. The educational partnership between home and school is what helps students to grow socially and academically. I wish you a happy, healthy summer with many days of learning. We will see you back at the Locke in the fall!
I would also like to acknowledge the Locke staff and thank them for another great year. Your hard work and dedication are what make the Locke a special school.
Let’s see what’s happening …
Monday, June 18th is an “A” day.  Please plan accordingly for the week.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us.”
— Hal Borland
AFTER SCHOOL THIS WEEK
We have concluded our after-school programs and late bus runs. Students that are staying after school will have to arrange for parent transportation.
FIELD DAY
This year's field day is rescheduled for Wednesday, June 20th . The cost for students is $10 and the attached form is due on Tuesday, June 19thWe would like all students to pay this fee as it covers the cost of the entire event and not just the t-shirt. This event is great fun for the kids, with both indoor and outdoor activities available over the course of the day, but does depend on a tremendous number of volunteers.  Whether you can stay the day, or spare even a 1/2 hour, any and all help is welcome and truly appreciated.  If you have a recent graduate who may be interested in and helping out and having an opportunity to go back to their former middle school and possibly even see some former teachers, please have them send an email to billericalockepto@gmail.comby Tuesday. Please mark your calendar and sign up using our signup genius link. Thank you in advance!
SUMMER MATH AND READING
Please see the Locke website for summer math and reading assignments.
LOST AND FOUND
The Lost and Found will be donated after the last day of school.  Please remind your child to look in the lost and found located under stairs in the lobby.
TEXTBOOKS, LIBRARY BOOKS
Please remember to have your child turn in all textbooks, library books, and any school issued supplies.  We prefer to have the books back rather than charge for the replacement.
 MATH PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Last Week’s Answer: They will save $85.58
SUMMER ROAD TRIP
Miranda, her brother Frank, and her mother and father are taking a road trip this summer. The car they are driving has four seats. If one of Miranda’s parents must be in the driver’s seat and there are no restrictions on who can sit in the other three seats, how many distinct seating arrangements are possible? Turn your answers into the main office. Keep solving!!
SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
The 2018 summer enrichment program will be held at the Locke. Please see the attached flyer and the link below:
PTO CORNER
Scholastic Book Fair...Our spring book fair was successful.  Many thanks to Jenny Day for organizing and running the fair, our school librarian,  Paula Cabral for all her help in holding down the Fort as needed and running the fare during evening events, and to Heather Gregorowitz for your time and effort as a parent volunteer. We hope that all the students will enjoy their new books and appreciate all the Participation in this mutually beneficial program.
Father's Day Gift & Card sales...First of all, Happy Father's Day to all the dads, stepdads, granddads, and all men with special roles in the lives of children!  Some of you may receive gifts that the children in your lives selected during lunchtime this past week. Much thanks to Diane Boudrot, Kelly Gerasimov, Laura Rosa, and Carole Reardon for volunteering their time to make this opportunity possible.
PTO Board:  June 30th will mark the end of their time in office for current PTO Co-Vice Presidents Linda Pimentel and Stacey Santiago, Treasurer Shelley Rosenbaum-Lipman, and Publicity/Communications Officer Diane Boudrot.  We could not have accomplished all that we did this year without all of their time, effort, and dedication! We are all truly appreciative of all they have done for the Locke PTO and community and wish them all the best in the future! Our PTO board for the 2018-2019 school year will officially take over on July 1st,  But everyone has been working together (and very well at that) to make all of the Locke's end of the year activities the best they can possibly be! Faith Stevens will continue on as President for one more year. Tricia LaFauci and Tricia Mahoney will serve as Co-Vice Presidents. Cheri Gargalianos is our new Treasurer. Kristen Aurilio will continue in her role as Secretary. Tracy Wahbeh will be our new Publicity/Communications officer. Stacey Santiago will continue to be a vital part of our PTO and is in the process of selecting her future position as a program chairperson/coordinator. Please join us in wishing all the best to our outgoing board members and welcoming our new board members. We are all looking forward to a productive new school year at the Locke.
Positions/ Volunteer Opportunities:
For the upcoming school year, we are seeking coordinators for the following:
Special Programs: one in school presentation/program per grade
Locke Apparel/Merchandise
Restaurant Night Fundraisers (monthly)
In School Fundraisers (trinkets sold to students during lunchtime)
Labels Collection Program (Box Tops for Education)
Walkathon
Field Day
We wish to thank Kristen Aurilio for taking over our Teacher Appreciation event, Tracy Wahbeh for taking over our Scrip gift card fundraising program, and incoming 6th-grade parent Kerry Parrella for signing up to be our Locke Holiday Tree coordinator for the Billerica Holiday Festival.
Please reach out for more information regarding any open positions or to express your interest in any of these positions. Thank you! Without the help of parent volunteers stepping up to give some time and share their expertise, we simply cannot have a successful PTO. Please help us continue our mission to make Life at the Locke the best it can be! We will keep the page updated throughout the summer!
New Program...As we are sure you remember, back to school time is a very busy time. Middle school students receive supply lists from each of the teachers in their team and from some specialists as well, and parents need to help their students gather up all of these materials within a short period of time. Parent and PTO member Carmen Fisher made a wonderful suggestion and has agreed to coordinate an effort to produce back to school supply kits that parents may purchase from the PTO instead of waiting for supply lists and finding time to order or go to stores to purchase all the materials needed. Mr. Garas and Faith Stevens plan on working with Carmen, with the support of the rest of the PTO to make this program come to fruition. Mr. Garas will provide the supply lists gathered from team teachers once they are available so that materials can be procured and kits can be assembled. Further details are in the process of being worked out, but information will be posted on the Locke PTO Facebook page as they become available...so stay tuned!!!
Education: Please save us your Box Tops from Education over the summer and send them in when school starts in September. Each box top you are willing to clip from a Box or other container from your grocery store purchase and send into the school earns the Locke PT0 10 cents toward supplies, events, and programs for the children. Thank you to all who have submitted Box Tops over this past school year.
Please contact us over the summer with any questions, concerns, or suggestions you may have at billericalockepto@gmail.com or by calling Faith Stevens at 978-667-6676 or 978-314-3389.
Don't forget to like and follow Locke PTO on Facebook!  We will keep the page updated throughout the summer!
