LIFE AT THE LOCKE … Issue #12 2017-2018

November 19, 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians, Staff, and Students,
I hope you are enjoying the weekend and were able to get out to the Turkey Trot today. Only 2 ½ Days of Learning this week, but we will get the most out of them as usual.
As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, I would like to wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season ahead. I am thankful for the support you have given to me and our staff this year and I know in the weeks ahead we will continue to work hard to provide tremendous learning opportunities for our students.
Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy your time with family and friends.
Monday, November 20th is a “D” day.  Please plan accordingly for the week.

MUSICAL INFORMATION MEETING
On Monday, November 20th from 1:45 – 2:45 there will be an information meeting for the 2018 musical, Guys and Dolls. Anyone interested in being in the cast or crew should attend.

THE TURKEY TOSS IS HERE …
The half day before Thanksgiving Student Council is going to hold the annual Turkey Toss in the gym to raise money and food for local families in need for the holidays. The Turkey Toss will be an assembly (one for each grade) the half day before Thanksgiving (Wednesday, Nov 22nd).  A few representatives from each eligible homeroom will be chosen at random at the assembly to participate in the turkey toss.  They will be slinging rubber turkeys attempting to hit targets to earn points.  The homeroom from each grade with the most points earned will win a doughnut party for the whole homeroom. Each homeroom will be responsible for raising money and collecting canned goods. We ask that each homeroom raise $50 AND collect 50 cans. Students can bring in donation through Wednesday

HOMEWORK CLUB/LATE BUSES
HW Club will only be on Monday of this week. We will have late buses on Monday only.

BOOK FAIR IS COMING ...
The book fair will be here from 11/27 -- 12/1.

MATH PROBLEM OF THE WEEK
Last Weeks’ Answer: 7:28 PM MST
Thanksgiving Pies – Pumpkin, please
For Thanksgiving dessert, a bakery made special pies.
They come in two sizes: Small and large. Both sizes are circular in shape, and both sizes are the same thickness, density, and fluffiness.
The small pie has a diameter of 10 inches and the large has a diameter of 20 inches.
If the 10" pie is priced at $3.00, how much should the 20" pie sell for? (Assume the bakery is managed by someone who uses a logical system for pricing the items in his shop).
Turn in answers to the main office. Prizes coming soon!

PTO CORNER
Coming Right Up! We have two fundraisers coming to a close this week! Scrip gift card orders must be turned in by tomorrowMonday November 20th in order to ensure delivery before the December school break. Cookie Dough and Pie orders are due this Wednesday, November 22nd, also to ensure holiday delivery. Please see the attached flyers for details and don't hesitate to reach out to us with any questions you may have.
Restaurant Night at Chipotle: Thank you to all those who attended our restaurant night fundraiser this pastWednesday. We hope you enjoyed a great meal and sincerely appreciate your support. Chipotle will donate a very generous 50% of all proceeds from orders supporting the Locke PTO to our school. Our next restaurant night will be announced soon.
Locke Tree at Billerica Holiday Festival: Our Star Wars themed holiday tree is now on display at the Billerica Public Library. Upon coming through the main doors, you will be able to see it as the middle of 3 trees displayed along the side of the staircase that goes to the lower level, to the left of the raffle table that greets you as you enter. Special thanks to Melissa Arsenault for setting up and decorating our tree! I (Faith) can tell you from seeing it myself that she did a wonderful job! We would also like to thank volunteers who picked donations up at the school and added them to the tree over the course of last week. And much thanks to all those who donated items for our tree. With little time to prepare, it was truly heartwarming to see our Locke Middle School community come together to participate in making this beautiful tree a reality. We could not have done it without you! We do hope that you will have some time over the holiday season to check out our Star Wars tree and the many other displays set up around the Billerica Public Library. They will be on display through December 11th. For anyone interested in possibly taking home either our Star Wars tree or one of the other many trees, wreaths, and gift baskets, raffle tickets will be available from November 18th through December 10th. The raffle winners will be announced December 12th. For a sneak preview of our tree, please check out the Locke PTO Facebook page.
Yankee Candle fundraiser: The holidays are coming up fast! Yankee Candles make wonderful gifts and also help make your own home festive during the holiday season.  Shop online from the comfort if home with purchases delivered right to your door while supporting our school at the same time. Just go towww.yankeecandlefundraising.com and enter our Group Number, 999972037 in the "Start Shopping" box. Orders may be placed through 1/10/2018.
Stress Free Fundraiser... Traditional fundraisers not your thing?  Our Alternative - Stress Free Fundraiser runs throughout the school year. Donations can be sent in at any time and are sincerely appreciated. 100% of all donations go to the Locke PTO to directly benefit the students and staff at the Locke. Checks should be made payable to Locke PTO in an envelope marked Locke PTO. Forms are helpful but not mandatory if Stress Free Fundraiser is on the memo line of your check.
Open Positions/ Volunteer Opportunities: We need volunteers to "shadow" our current chair people for the following positions to take over at the end of the 2017-2018 school year:
Co Vice President (fundraising)
PTO Treasurer
Box Tops for Education Program Coordinator.
Please reach out for more information or to express your interest in any of these positions. Thank you! Without the help of parent volunteers stepping up to give some time and share their expertise, we simply cannot have a successful PTO. Please help us continue our mission to make Life at the Locke the best it can be!
Volunteer Opportunities... The Locke PTO welcomes any and all help that parents are willing to give. We have many different opportunities to help out, some at our school or in other parts of Billerica and some that you can do from home. No amount of time and effort is too little, so please take a look at the attached list and let us know what you can do to help us make Life at the Locke that much better! Remember, even if each parent or family volunteers one hour of their time and effort, it all adds up and benefits all our kids and our Locke community. Forms may be sent into school with your child labeled Locke PTO or simply send us an email at billericalockepto@gmail.com letting us know how you would like to help! Thank you!
Box Tops for Education: Please save and send us your Box Tops from Education. Each box top you are willing to clip from a Box or other container from your grocery store purchase and send in to the school earns the Locke PT0 10 cents toward supplies, events, and programs for the children. Please make sure that the expiration dates remain intact so that we can receive credit. Box tops should be turned in in either an envelope or Ziploc bag clearly labeled with your child's name and home room number. Thank you!
